International Women’s Day, is a chance to magnify the call for equality for women in education, the workplace, indeed all aspects of life. It is sad that in 2025 there should still be a need to do so, but here we are.
Offering girls and women the same chances as their male counterparts should be an intrinsic part of all cultures. Women have so much to offer; and a balanced workplace, equal partnerships in the home and the opportunity to study should not be withheld from them.
From a personal perspective, wearing my hats of language teacher, communications specialist, and netball coach, I feel education is the key which will open the door to equality.
Education is the foundation of equality, providing girls and women with the knowledge, confidence, and skills to shape their own futures. When women are educated, they gain financial independence, better health outcomes, and the ability to advocate for their rights.
Yet, millions of girls worldwide still face barriers to education, from poverty and conflict to outdated social norms. To truly achieve gender equality, we must accelerate action, ensuring every girl has access to quality education and the tools to thrive.
Men play an important role, too
It doesn’t stop there. Education isn’t just about giving girls and women the tools to succeed, it also involves teaching men to be allies in the pursuit of gender equality. When men are educated about the importance of creating inclusive spaces, they can actively support women’s access to education and career advancement.
Whether it’s challenging outdated stereotypes, mentoring female colleagues, or advocating for equal opportunities in the workplace, men play a crucial role in accelerating action.
Invest in education
This year’s International Women’s Day theme, Accelerate Action, is a powerful reminder that change must happen now. Investing in education means investing in a future where women lead, innovate, and drive progress in every sector. Governments, organisations, and communities must commit to funding schools, eliminating discrimination, and creating safe learning environments. By working together, we can build a society where talent and ambition alone determine success, ensuring everyone has the chance to reach their full potential.
By championing education for girls today, we lay the groundwork for a more just and equal world tomorrow.
